GIFTING / FIELD NOTES

Influencer gifting: a practical guide for brands

Influencer gifting centres on sending products to creators. A useful pilot starts with a specific audience and a product that fits naturally into a creator’s work, rather than a large mailing list.

1. Choose one learning goal

Your first pilot does not need to prove awareness, product feedback and sales at once. Ask an answerable question such as “Which use case helps creators explain this product?” Choose a small group whose content can help you learn that.

2. Assess content fit before audience size

Read recent posts and audience questions. Look at the problems the creator addresses, their filming context and the price range of products they cover. A broad category match alone does not establish relevance.

  • Would this product fit an existing routine?
  • Does the audience use your target language and market?
  • How has the creator discussed similar products recently?

3. Ask before shipping

Explain what the product is, why you chose this creator and what you are proposing. Collect delivery information privately after acceptance. Distinguish a gift from a proposal for specified content deliverables; clarify expectations together before sending anything.

4. Make the package easy to use

Start with one main product, concise usage information and a personal note. Prioritise protection in transit over excess packaging. Keep addresses and private contact details off cards that might appear on camera.

5. Track costs and outcomes separately

Record product cost, packaging and delivery expenses. Track acceptance, delivery, feedback and any published content in separate fields. Do not assume posting or sales. Discuss any intended reuse of creator content separately before using it in advertising.
